In the spotlight

Elixir is happy to be highlit in a Studio Spotlight on The Dieline, an on-line showcase of “the world’s best examples of packaging.” The feature about Elixir presents several packaging projects, plus multi-component invitations and studio gifts from holidays past. Andrew Gibbs, The Dieline’s Founder & Editor-In-Chief, is compiling a hardcover book, titled “Box Bottle Bag: The World’s Best Package Design by The Dieline,” to be released internationally early next year. Elixir’s bottle design for Golden Star Tea will be included. Cheers!

Celebrating the Great Outdoors

Elixir is delighted to be working with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), a non-profit organization established by Congress in 1984 to preserve and restore our nation’s native wildlife species and habitats. The Foundation directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those funds with private contributions.

Elixir is creating invitations and event collateral for NFWF’s annual Bay Area fundraising event Celebrating the Great Outdoors, to be held March 24th. This year’s honoree is Julie Packard, marine biologist and Executive Director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. San Francisco’s own Stanlee Gatti will be designing the event.

Since its inception, NFWF has invested more than $1.5 billion in conservation, providing over 10,000 grants to more than 3,500 organizations in all 50 states and over 50 other countries.

Communication Arts profiles Elixir

The January/February 2009 issue of CA, featuring an in-depth article about Elixir, is on newsstands now. Founder Jennifer Jerde talks about Elixir’s “North Star” branding process, and clients describe their experiences working with the firm. Event designer Stanlee Gatti, who has collaborated with Elixir on projects for Lucasfilm, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the California Academy of Sciences, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, pays the supreme compliment, “I don’t think there’s anyone like them!” Download the complete article in pdf format here.

Designerly Dozen

Jennifer Jerde, who alchemized (?!) Elixir in 1992, has been selected as one of a baker’s dozen of San Francisco designers whose work will be showcased in San Francisco Graphic Design. The exhibition opens at the San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design on January 15 (and will run through April 12, 2009).

Curated by Michael Osborne, the exhibition will also provide historical context, including a nod to local design legends and to the illustrious printers who were the City’s first graphic artists.

In addition to showing selected strategic client work, Elixir will display a heady retrospective of the firm’s holiday gifts to clients and friends.

The other designers whose work will be showcased include Barbara Vick of Barbara Vick Design, Josh Chen of Chen Design Associates, Sara Schneider of Chronicle Books, Tom Ingalls of Ingalls Design, Mitchell Mauk of Mauk Design, Michael Schwab of Michael Schwab Studio, Christopher Simmons of Mine, Cinthia Wen of Noon, Jennifer Bostic of Paper Plane Studio, Philippe Becker of Philippe Becker Design, and Adam Brodsley and Eric Heiman of Volume Inc.

The genuine article

Elixir is excited to announce an upcoming profile on the firm in the Jan/Feb 2009 Communication Arts. CA, now the largest international publication for visual communicators and appreciators, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2009. Since its founding, the company has been a patron-promoter and a pioneer in the graphic arts. We expect to have a downloadable pdf of the profile available here in January.

Inviting indeed

A cage of one’s own

Communication Arts selected Elixir’s logo for Castor Architecture for their 2008 Design Annual. CA received almost 8,500 entries, selecting only 240 for publication (including 16 trademarks). Elixir also designed the stationery system and website.

Prior to starting his practice, Daniel Castor spent time in Rome, making many analytical drawings of Bramante’s Tempietto — many of them suggestive of the birdcages he collects. As the architect comments, “Tradition is a beautiful cage with an open door. We are free to come and go as we please.”

Universal appeal

Elixir-designed invitations for the Academy of Sciences’ opening gala and dinners. The dinner invitation presents a cosmic perspective, starting with a chart of spirals created by prime numbers that holds a series of ultra-recyclable enclosures posing the Academy’s Big Questions. The gala invitation zeroes in on the festivities with a succession of photos: the earth from 250,000 mi. away; an aerial view of San Francisco from 200 mi. up;  the Academy from 1,000 ft. overhead; a sneak-peek at the tropical fish from 2 ft.; and the champagne to be served, from a mere 10 mm. The Academy opened to the public this past Saturday, September 27!
