Bridal brunch brava!

Wedding Chic, Gump’s recent showcase for brides, was a grand success. Elixir designed the collateral for the February 8 event, including a custom logotype used in print ads and the e-nnouncement. Consultants from Gump’s wedding registry and specialty purveyors were on-hand to tour brides-to-be through the displays. Elixir has designed and evolved the Gump’s catalogue since 2005, evoking in print the distinctive in-store shopping experience.

Celebrating the Great Outdoors

Elixir is delighted to be working with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), a non-profit organization established by Congress in 1984 to preserve and restore our nation’s native wildlife species and habitats. The Foundation directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those funds with private contributions.

Elixir is creating invitations and event collateral for NFWF’s annual Bay Area fundraising event: ‘Celebrating the Great Outdoors,’ to be held March 24th. This year’s honoree is Julie Packard, marine biologist and Executive Director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. San Francisco’s own Stanlee Gatti will be designing the event.

Since its inception, NFWF has invested more than 1.5 billion in conservation, providing over 10,000 grants to more than 3,500 organizations in all 50 states and over 50 other countries.

Opening night at SFMC+D

Last Thursday’s opening of San Francisco Graphic Design at the SF Museum of Craft + Design drew a kaleidoscopic crowd. Guests were challenged to see the design through the designers.

We hope you’ll visit, or revisit, the exhibition, which is up until April 26, at 550 Sutter Street, between Powell and Mason. While you’re out and about: The Hotel Rex, two doors up, has a peek-worthy elevator, decoupaged with vintage pages from San Francisco Social Registers. The hotel’s interior was designed by Elixir client Candra Scott & Anderson—whose logo is featured in our Communication Arts profile along with several invitations and other projects showcased at the exhibition. Elixir in the mixer!

Elixir is proud to be one of twelve San Francisco design firms whose work is showcased in San Francisco Graphic Design, a new exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design. If you’re in the neighborhood, join us at the opening preview on Thursday evening, January 15, from 5 to 9 pm. Elixir’s mini-exhibit will include a retrospective of holiday gifts to friends and clients, plus selected work for local events and innovators.

Here comes the… bridal event

Gump’s recently invited Elixir to design collateral for Wedding Chic: a custom logotype, plus print ads and an e-nnouncement with a photograph from frequent Elixir collaborator John Dolan. The bridal brunch on February 8 will present the ultimate in elegant, relevant homewares, supplemented by displays and demos from specialty purveyors. The Wedding Registry at Gump’s has enchanted and inspired generations of Bay Area brides. Elixir has designed and evolved the Gump’s catalogue since 2005, evoking in print the distinctive in-store shopping experience.

Party arty

Elixir again received the vote of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts to create the materials for their annual bash. Artists Ball 7 presented a high-spirited platform for The New Party ’08, complete with a voter invitation pamphlet to the “political funraiser.” The two indistinguishable candidates were San Francisco’s iconic identical twins, Marian and Vivian Brown. The perfect pair inspired a pork barrel o’ puns {Twint: E Pluribus Twonum}, and the RSVP ballot was chad madness.

Off the top of our heads: Poster gals Marian and Vivian Brown show their unimbleachable character.

Universal appeal

Elixir-designed invitations for the Academy of Sciences’ opening gala and dinners. The dinner invitation presents a cosmic perspective, starting with a chart of spirals created by prime numbers that holds a series of ultra-recyclable enclosures posing the Academy’s Big Questions. The gala invitation zeroes in on the festivities with a succession of photos: the earth from 250,000 mi. away; an aerial view of San Francisco from 200 mi. up;  the Academy from 1,000 ft. overhead; a sneak-peek at the tropical fish from 2 ft.; and the champagne to be served, from a mere 10 mm. The Academy opened to the public this past Saturday, September 27!

Trip the Light Fantastic

Made in the Shade, Gump’s first-ever benefit, was a runway success. The fashion show and display of one-of-a-kind lampshades delighted the crowd, who were generous with their applause and their bidding paddles. The illuminati who created the shades turned up their brain-bulbs to create witty, wacky, and wow-able art. The gumparazzi wore all black. His Elegance, emcee Willie Brown, Jr., sported a crisp pocket square. The evening supports a newly endowed scholarship to the California College of the Arts. What a bright idea! More »

Stage of Enlightenment

Elixir was delighted to design the save-the-date and invitation for Made in the Shade, Gump’s first-ever benefit for the arts. The event will support a newly endowed scholarship to the California College of the Arts. An array of artists, designers, and celebs have created one-of-a-kind lampshades that models will sport on the catwalk. Fashionable former mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. will emcee.

The save-the-date was an op artifact, a translucent black sleeve with lampshade silhouette, whose pattern changed as the “light” came on and the information card came out. Note for non-locals: The name Made in the Shade is a triple entendre, because Gump’s southern façade is on Maiden Lane.

When: 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Where: Gump’s at 135 Post Street, San Francisco

Overview indeed

Since 1853, the California Academy of Sciences has been dedicated to exploring, explaining, and protecting the natural world. Prompted by damage sustained in the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, the Academy selected Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano to redesign the facility. Construction began in 2005 on the largest cultural renovation project in San Francisco’s history, uniting the planetarium, aquarium, and natural history museum under one “living roof.” To herald the reopening on September 27, 2008 in Golden Gate Park, the Academy planned an opening gala – The Big Bang – to benefit education programs, and two dinners to honor the leaders and philanthropists whose vision and generosity had made the new building a reality. Elixir’s designs for the three events reinforced the new Academy brand and invited recipients to come closer, asking “How did we get here? How can we stay?”

Invitations were printed with soy inks on 100% recyclable materials, including Nori seaweed, 100% recycled chipboard, reused pages from Scientific American magazines, and aluminum foil. Aerial image by Travis Pynn. Photographs of the invitations to come. For more information about the opening of the new Academy, go to http://calacademy.org/visit/.
